RBAC bilingual edition debuts with thematic issue

 

For the first time since its launch in 1969, the Brazilian Journal of Clinical Analyses (RBAC – Revista Brasileira de Análises Clínicas) publishes a bilingual edition, marking the beginning of a new phase of the scientific journal of the Brazilian Society of Clinical Analysis – SBAC.

RBAC will now publish articles in their original version (Portuguese) and will fund the translation and publication of the English version of the same article, expanding access to information for the international community.

This special edition selected articles focused on fundamentals, techniques, and practical application of the subject by clinical laboratories, with articles in the fields of Clinical Chemistry, Quality Management and Control, Clinical Parasitology, and Urinalysis.

The article titled “Reference Change Value: A laboratory tool for interpreting test results” highlights the importance of each phase of a laboratory test for interpreting quantitative results, with a focus on the concept of reference change value (RCV), an important tool that assesses the significance of changes in laboratory results, especially in consecutive tests. Another thematic article in the area of Quality Management and Control, “Estimates of measurement uncertainty associated with Clinical Laboratories and their implications for clinical practice”, provides detailed information on measurement uncertainty, which requires a series of mathematical and statistical calculations based on the validation and verification of the analytical methods used in the laboratory.

The “Functional Coprological Examination” is detailed in an article that outlines the techniques and procedures for conducting this test, with illustrative images, providing clinical analysts with a rich scientific resource for consultation.

In the field of Clinical Biochemistry, the article “Laboratory tests for Diabetes diagnosis with an emphasis on glucose load testing” addresses the recently updated criteria for diagnosing diabetes and sheds light on glucose load tests, which often raise questions among clinical analysts.

This special edition also includes important recommendations and positions developed by the technical-scientific committees of SBAC. One of them is the “Position statement of the Brazilian Society of Clinical Analysis (SBAC) on the report of the presence of spermatozoa in urine samples – 2024”, which establishes an algorithm for reporting the presence of spermatozoa in urine in laboratory reports, with suggestions for comments and observations that can be included in the report. Another, titled “Recommendation from the Brazilian Society of Clinical Analysis – SBAC regarding the preservation of urine samples for forensic purposes from female individuals suspected of sexual abuse”, proposes procedures and guidelines related to the chain of custody of the sample and the preservation of the urine sample for forensic human genetic identification purposes.

Finally, this edition includes a very important article for the laboratory segment that discusses the structuring of the National Policy for Laboratory Diagnosis (PNDL – Política Nacional de Diagnóstico Laboratorial) in the context of healthcare.
